Cette première édition en anglais des écrits d’Elliott Carter rassemble la plupart des textes publiés par le compositeur de ses tout premiers articles datant de 1937 jusqu’à ceux de 1976, présentés dans un ordre chronologique. Ce vaste corpus est précédé d’une note introductive de Else et Kurt Stone. Il est complété par une courte biographie chronologique accompagnée des principales compositions jusqu’en 1976. Les éditeurs donnent également la liste des quelques articles (quatorze en tout) non inclus dans cette édition. L’ouvrage se termine par un index très complet. Dans la note d’introduction, les éditeurs justifient la présentation chronologique en expliquant qu’une organisation thématique leur semblait difficile dans la mesure où Carter aborde beaucoup de sujets différents au cours d’un même essai. Ils expliquent aussi que le suivi chronologique a l’avantage de fournir une histoire en continu de l’Amérique musicale, culturelle ainsi que du développement socio-culturel de l’art tout au long d’une période de la musique américaine particulièrement intéressante. Cette période s’étend des années 1930 au milieu des années 1970. Ils précisent également que la présentation chronologique permet de suivre à la fois le développement de la propre personnalité de Carter en tant qu’observateur et en tant que compositeur.
